Dialup Networking Error 720

Problem: Error 720: No PPP Protocols configured. Dialup Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols you specified in the SErver Type settings.
Error 611: Route is not available

Operating Systems: Windows ME, 98, 2000, NT, XP

This error is generally caused by incorrectly configured, missing, or corrupt Dialup Networking protocols.

This problem can usually be resolved by just restarting your computer.

If restarting does not resolve the problem, check your Dialup Networking settings:

Windows 98 Windows ME

If your Dialup Networking settings appear correct, you should next check the Network configuration in the Control Panel:

Open the Control Panel and double click the Network icon. You should have the following components installed:

  • Client for Microsoft Network (or Microsoft Family Logon)
  • Dialup Adapter
  • TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter

Note: Your network screen will vary from the image above.

Before you begin...

Changing the Windows Network settings may require the original Windows installation CD or disks, or Windows system source (cabinet) files on the computers's hard drive. Isp City cannot be held responsible for any problems with the Windows Network configurations if these items are required but are not supplied at the time of configuration.

If you do not have Client for Microsoft Networks or Microsoft Family Logon) listed

  • Click the Add button.
  • Select Client and click Add.
  • Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers, then choose Client for Microsoft Networks.
  • Click OK to add the client and return to the Network screen.

If you do not have Dialup Adapter listed

Windows ME

  • The Dialup Adapter cannot be added from the Network screen in Windows ME.
  • Close the Network screen, and run the Internet Connection Wizard. During the setup, you will be prompted to install files. This will reinstall the Dialup Adapter and other necessary Dialup Networking components.

Windows 98

  • Click the Add button.
  • Select Adapter and click Add.
  • Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers, then choose Dialup Adapter.
  • Click OK to add the client and return to the Network Screen.

If you do not have TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter installed.

  • Click the Add button.
  • Select Protocol and click Add.
  • Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers, then choose TCP/IP.
  • Click OK to add the client and return to the Network screen.

After adding necessary components, click OK on the Network screen. You may be prompted for your Windows CD or installation files. Choose to restart the computer when prompted.

After the computer has restarted, try the connection again. If you are still having difficulties, you may need to remove the connection and recreate it.

If you are using Windows XP, try resetting TCP/IP using netsh.

Error 720 and Cisco VPN client

If you use Windows 2000/NT and have uninstalled the Cisco VPN client, some files needed for PPP connections may have been removed in addition to a change in some registry settings. Try reinstalling the Cisco VPN client. If you want to remove the VPN client, uninstall the software manually. See Uninstalling the Client and manually reinstalling the driver (WinNT/2000; Mac) for instructions.

You may also try the following:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  2. Select Add/Remove Windows Components
  3. Uncheck "Networking services" and "Other network file and print services"
  4. From any of the Network Dial-up connections, choose Properties > Networking > Uninstall Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  5. Reboot when prompted
  6. Return to the Control Panel > Network Dial-up connection > Properties > Networking > Install Internet Protocol
  7. Re-check the boxes in Add/Remove Programs > Windows Components
  8. Attempt to connect
