Dialup Username & Password Errors

Problem: Error 691/718. Invalid username or Password. Authentication Failed.
Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain.
Remote Server could not authenticate the connection. Dial-up networking could not establish a connection; check your password and try again.

Operating Systems: Windows XP, 2000, ME, 98, & NT; Macintosh OS X, OS 8-9

These types of errors are generally caused by mistyping your username and password. However, the account may be inactive if payment is past due.

If you are prompted for your username and password before the computer connects:

  • Clear the Username field, and re-enter your dialup username. It should always be in lower case letters. Most customers will use the form of username@ Isp City.net.
  • Clear the Password field, and re-enter your dialup password. Passwords are Case Sensitive - this means that a password of ButterFlies829 is different from butterflies829.

If you are not prompted for your username and password before the computer connects:

Windows XP, 2000, & ME:

  • Open the Control Panel and double click the Internet Options icon.
  • Click the Connections tab, highlight your Isp City dialup connection and click the Settings button.
  • Re-enter both the username and password in the Dial-up settings section.
  • Click OK, and OK again to save the changes.

Windows 98

  • Open My Computer and double click Dial-Up Networking.
  • Double click the Isp City connection icon.
Note: If the computer starts to dial the connection, click Cancel. Then, click the Connections menu and select Settings. Check Prompt for information before dialing, click OK, and double click the Isp City icon again.
  • Re-enter both the username and password. Click Connect.
  • The new username and password will not be saved until it is successfully connected.

Windows NT

  • Open My Computer and double click Dial-Up Networking.
  • Select your Isp City connection in the Phonebook entry to dial field.
  • Click the More button and choose Edit entry and phone book properties.
  • Click the Security tab, and click the Unsave Password button.
  • Click OK to save the changes. The next time the connection is dialed, when you are prompted for the username and password, reenter both.

Macintosh OS X

  • Click the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
  • In the System Preferences window, click Network.
  • Click the PPP tab.
  • Re-enter your username and password in the Account Name and Password fields.
  • Close the System Preferences and save the changes.

Macintosh OS 8-9

  • Click the Apple menu, go to Control Panels, and click Remote Access. Note: Remote Access is known as PPP in earlier versions of Mac OS.
  • Re-enter both the username and password.
  • Close Remote Access and Save the changes.
